Meet Bosede Iyerwarun
Sassy, Savvy & Sexy black business owner.
Please introduce yourself
My name is Bosede Iyewarun. I am the designer, founder and CEO of EarKandie! POParazzi & Celebrity Inspired Jewelry.
You have some gorgeous jewelry pieces. How did you get started in the jewelry business?
Well, thank you! The story is quite humorous actually. Back when the ORIGINAL Basketball wives debut, I immediately fell in love with their jewelry and accessories. I remember I had just gotten my hair cut really low and I knew big earrings looked great with short hair. I was so fascinated by the styles and colors, I searched the internet for Basketball wife earrings and BINGO! All the huge hoops I was crazy about came up in my search with photos of the celebrity wearing the jewelry. I found 5 different pairs in the jumbo hoops and ordered them off Ebay. I paid $189.00 for 5 pairs of earrings. When it was all said and done, every time I wore a pair to work, I had to keep my friends from trying to take them from me. They were all so persistent, I ended up SELLING 4 pairs OFF my ears! It was at that point, I realized I was not the only one that followed celebrity and paparazzi fashion but a whole lot of ladies also interested in those pieces. I did a little research and discovered the only real places ladies and gentlemen can find celebrity inspired jewelry was either online or in NY, LA or ATL. I decided to make 15 pairs of hoops a few weeks after my ordeal at work and by close of business the day I took in the Hoop Earrings, I had them all sold and $350. Which was my very first investment into EarKandie!
How did you come up with the name EarKandie?
I googled ‘catchy’ business names. I’ve always like the company name SkullCandy….. Headphones by a Hip Hop artist and have often used the term ArmCandy and EyeCandy. My thoughts for earrings went right to EarCandy. Too easy…it was already taken, so I started playing around with different ways of spelling Candy. I love the fact that it worked out to my favor because anything spelled out of its normal spelling is often remembered. When I researched EarKandie! [with the exclamation mark]…it was wide open. So I immediately reserved earkandie.com, .net, .org and .us through Go Daddy and the rest is history!
What keeps you motivated in your business?
Oh my! Lots of things! For one, never running out of designs. Always coming up with out of the box ideas and being so excited when they turn into masterpieces! Seeing my followers and my customers use and recommend my pieces. Being able to show and demonstrate how easy it is to make your dreams come true. Knowing that what I do and this Gift is a divine Gift from God. Knowing that one day, EarKandie! will be on the map and make its presence known worldwide! Those are the things that keep me going.
Owning a business comes with trials and errors. What's the biggest lesson you've learned as an entrepreneur?
Without a doubt, the biggest lesson I have learned is that everyone has an agenda. You have to be clever and smart and make smart choice in the partnerships you choose to be a part of and the ones you prefer to pass on. Integrity and great work ethic are critical to running a successful and reputable company.
What's your favorite jewelry piece for Summer 2013?
I will have to go with the Gold Body Chain from my “Celebrity Couture Collection”. It can be worn over a tank dress, over a one-piece swim suit or even over a one-piece shorts jumpsuit. It’s quite sexy! Lol
Women in the Kansas City area have a lot of talents and businesses. What makes your brand stand out?
When I started this company, one of my goals was to “be a standard by which all others are measured”. My BRAND is different simply because I do not duplicate any of my designs or pieces. There will ALWAYS be one subtle change. Look closely at two pieces you think may be identical, chances are they are not. You may think that’s impossible but its very doable. I want EVERY client/customer to walk away knowing they have a unique piece all to themselves!
Whats the sole purpose of your jewelry line?
To create and design CELEBRITY pieces that are almost impossible to find at a very affordable price! I want to design and create pieces that people would never have thought could be made into body jewelry. My target is not just the bracelets, earrings and necklaces. I want to put jewelry on the head, around the shoulder, over your clothes, on your shoes, around your ankles, around your neck and down your back. I want to create something for every part of the body!
Where do you see your business in the next 5 years?
God willing. I see EarKandie! with 3 major store locations in 3 different states and 1 location overseas!
Any up coming events?
Yes! EarKandie! is also a designer participating in the KC Natural Hair Expo August 10th at the Holiday Inn, CoCo Keys Resort. A more detailed list of upcoming as well as past events can be viewed on our website. www.earkandie.com Go to the Events Page.

Oohlala Pick Of The Day: Avion
Please introduce yourself.
My name is Avion Wallace. I am a recent graduate from Shaw University in Raleigh, North Carolina but I am a native from Kansas City, Missouri.
What is your degree in?
My degree is a Bachelors of Arts in Mass Communications with a concentration in Journalism.
A lot of students enroll in college without really knowing what they would like to pursue. How did you know your major was the right choice for you?
First entering college I was undecided, however entering the college orientation and the classes they offered I began to look at the ones that was more appealing towards me and made my decision from there.
Taking a full course load and working in college can be extremely stressful. How did you manage your time and stay focused?
I used every second of the 24 hours given in a day to do what needed to be done. Yes, college parties sounded better than homework but thinking about the goal in the end was what made me press on. That and not having to pay for school anymore!
What are some of your future plans for your career?
My future plans for my career is attending graduate school and getting my masters in Public Relations. I want to make a difference by working for non-profit organizations that focus on African American young women. My super goal is to work for My Black is Beautiful or Black Girls Rock!
Any tips to college students who are striving to be the best?
My tip is to never stop dreaming and to always be a self motivator. If you never stop dreaming then you will move mountains and if you keep yourself motivated then who can stop you? NO ONE!
Let's switch gears here. You've worked retail for a couple years now and you are very fashionable. What are some of your favorite stores to shop? (online/catalog) And why?
I love to shop at Macy's, Forever 21, Lulu's, Dillard's, Gojane
I love to shop at these places because they inspire me whenever I shop. When I pick up or see a piece that they are selling, I then see the whole outfit in my mind instantly. If a store or online shop can do that to me, it's a keeper.
What's your favorite trend this summer that you'll be wearing?
My favorite trend this summer is single sole shoes, bright pastel colors, major jewelry accessories, and some mesh for the nights out.
How did you manage to stay fashionable for class?
Waking up early and wanting to look fashionable for myself. If I look fashionable for class then I feel confident to conquer the day!
What are some go to pieces in your wardrobe?
- my go to pieces are my:
-ponte leggings or skinny jeans
-a nice colorful blousy top
-cute heels or wedges
- arm candy, big necklace, studded earrings
Fashion is all about taking risks and expressing ones inner self. What are 3 words that describe your style?
I would describe my style as
-trendy -cute -diva-ish

Oohlala Pick Of The Day: Alexandria the songstress
|
Sometimes having a brief encounter with an individual can alter your outlook on life. For me, it was the better. They pull back the curtains of destruction so that you may see the light;an angel. Assigned to you only, this angel transform your way of thinking, speaking, and all behavioral indecency. When a brief encounter reaches a remarkable memory...
Thank you, Alexandria |
Please introduce yourself.
Hello.
My name is Alexandria.
Age-wise, I am both younger and older than I appear, all depending upon where I am or whatever it is I am wearing.
I am of Hispanic and African American nationality, and am currently majoring in the studies of humanities while also minoring in music; taking classes online.
You are a multi-talented soul. How did your love for music begin?
-Laughs-
Well, first and foremost thank you, and all glory to God.
Secondly, to more directly answer your question, my love for music began as a child.
Out of all of the toys in which I was blessed to have within my childhood, I always spent the most time entertaining myself with the musical ones.
The earliest memory I have is having this colorful mini-cassette player with a plastic microphone attached to it.
I would dance around the house in only my diaper, singing along to the songs, quite redundantly, "The More We Get Together," and "You Are My Sunshine."
And so from there, I would say that my romance and lifetime of companionship with music had begun.
How has being a songwriter changed your outlook on life?
Honestly?
You begin to find that there are many moments in your life, be it beautiful, tragic, exciting, and/or consciously awakening, in which you want to write about.
You feel an almost unrelenting inner tugging at your existence to put down on paper whatever it is you're feeling. I guess that also comes with being a writer as well.
However, when you put those words on paper to song, it allows you to capture that moment in a sweeter way; giving you something more grace-given to remember.
As a song-writer I imagine you get inspired by your surroundings often. Take us through a memorable moment you've had that inspired you to write a song.
Can a question be perfect and insanely intense at the same time?
This is a really good question, Amanda.
And you're exactly right when you say that you can be inspired by your surroundings as a songwriting.
But, it's a bit more than simply your everyday surroundings. You know:
"I went outside.
I saw a tree.
It looked really green,
Now I feel hap-py."
-Laughs-
Yes. It's a little deeper than that, at least for me.
Though, more seriously, I find that I write mostly about emotions; especially love and heartbreak and how the transitioning of our world has expressed itself to me.
And while I am no Taylor Swift in the songwriting love-and-heartbreak department, I'm usually indulged in whichever emotion is present when I write, because it helps so much to naturally feel what you are writing.
A memory I can recall when caught within my emotions, while also having a pen and paper nearby was on the day I was finding closure within a relationship which was heading south.
At one point this individual and I had been over the moon for each other.
I can even say to this day, I've yet to have fallen for someone like them.
They were one of those people in your life where, after them, you begin to subconsciously compare everyone else you may romantically interact with, to the traits of that person; which is a reckless way to love or move on.
I remember feeling distraught and emotionally ill-protected, as if anything else that happened within that day could strongly sway my feelings about everything.
I felt very imbalanced, because slowly-by-slowly I realized I was losing a part of me that was once certain about particular parts of my life, that I'd now have to rebuild or continue to build without that person there.
A few lines I composed in the midst of this emotional-tornado, were these:
Chorus from the song titled: Ready.
"Will-not ask you to stay when you want to leave.
I will not fall down on my knees.
But where is the strength we need to make us believe?
What we had is with us still.
What we need is time to heal.
And I'll be here when you're ready.
Be here when you are ready."
A lot of people I know perceive me to be this happy-go-lucky, skip-off-into-the-sunset-without-a-care-in-the-world kind of person. And I am. But only on Mondays.
And while I'm only joking, I'm being most honest when I say that I am one of the most fragile and strongest people I know.
And to admit that, I believe, comes with when you begin to really understand yourself.
Who are some of your music influences?
Oh gosh.
I'll give you a brief list of my top 20.
To explain why I admire them all would be never-ending.
1. Mariah Carey
2. Tamia
3. Lauryn Hill
4. Natalie Cole
5. Luther Vandross
6. John Legend
7. Deborah Cox
8. Corinne Bailey Rae
9. Chante Moore
10. India Arie
11. Esperanza Spalding
12. Janelle Monae
13. Lianna La Havas
14. Elle Varner
15. Emeli Sande
16. Ingrid Michealson
17. Adele
18. Christian Aguilera
19. Norah Jones
20. Lupe Fiasco
It's not hard to notice your oh so beautiful locks of curls. How long have you been natural?
Oh, why thank you, Amanda.
And as a curl-sister yourself, I do admire how effortlessly gorgeous your hair appears.
I've been a chemically-free natural for about 4 years.
Most all of the women in my family, both Hispanic and African American wear there hair naturally as well.
What inspired you to embrace your natural hair?
The inspiration to fully embrace my natural hair was my culture, new environment and family.
I recently moved from a 5 year stay in Atlanta, Georgia to the Bronx in New York.
Both cities and states are bustling with Naturalistas!
And in the midst of my 5 years venture of residing in Georgia, my family founded a company called, Good Hair Day Series.
With my two younger sisters and I being the Founder and Co-Founders of Good Hair Day Series Teens.
(Provided below is a link to a site and further explains what the Good Hair Day Series is all about)
What has been the most rewarding part about being a natural haired girl?
The most rewarding part about wearing my hair natural, past the compliments and looks, is how much I feel it is a part of the real me.
I know there are no heavy chemicals manipulating my natural texture and curl pattern.
I don't have to invert any kinds of extension or weave to further express myself.
Whenever I go to your everyday hair salons in the city, the ones that have a few natural-girls a month, they are always fascinated by my hair.
How it spirals and curls and springs to life expansively.
And how, when treated properly, soft and tame it actually is.
Who is your hair crush(es)?
Oh, that's an easy one.. kind of.
Corinne Bailey Rae
Yaya Da Costa
Solange Knowles
Tracee Ellis Ross
Sophie Okonedo
Esperanza Spalding
Chrisette Michelle
Shingai Shoniwa
Jurnee Smollett-Bell
If you could start all over what are some natural hair mistakes that you would never make again?
I would never make the mistake again of assuming all products for natural hair can be used on any kind of natural hair.
For example: Ms. Jessie's products are terrible in my hair, and believe me, I've tried them all from that brand.
I've come to find that any kind of creamy product must be saturated with a watery based product or in a spray bottle with water to really marinate into my strands.
What are your 3 must have products?
**CONDITIONER. Point. Blank. End of story.**
But, more specifically:
1. Kinky-Curly's Knot Today herbal conditioner and detangler.
2. Design Essentials' Curl Stretching Cream
3. The entire products line from Sofn'free's Nothing But series: More specifically the Cleansing Conditioner. It's unconditionally loving to your curls!

Oohlala Pick Of The Day: Brittany Parrish
|
Meet Brittany I was scrolling through fashion pictures on instagram and stumbled across a page called Vinty_fresh. What captured my attention the most were the thrifted items. I was in love with all the pieces she had on her page and on her website. She's ambitious and fashionable. What's not to love, right? |
Please introduce yourself
My name is Brittany Parrish and I'm from Detroit, MI now living in Dallas, TX.. and I LOVE to thrift!!!
You are a major thrifter and self made entrepreneur. How did you get started?
Well I started thifting as a child with my mother. I wasn't really that into it though until about a year ago when I decided I didn't want to wear what everyone else was wearing. I didn't want everyone having access to what I wore. I felt thrifting was perfect for that, because of the one of a kind pieces you can find there. I started thrifting and every time I went, my finds just kept getting better and better. I started gaining confidence, developing my style, and coming into my own. I embraced it. I was encouraged by my family and friends to start selling my finds on an online store. That's when VintyFreshClothing started. It has taken off ever since.
Vintage pieces, Colors, Prints, Acid Wash... I like a little bit of everything. I love to stand out. I'm proud of my eclectic yet signature style!
What was the first thing you ever thrifted?
The first thing I ever thrifted was this vintage red and tan crossbody purse. I was in 5th grade when I went to the Value Village with my mom that day and stumbled upon it. I loved that purse.
Give us 3 tips about thrifting.
1. Have patience. It may take a few tries, but once you find that one thing you love, you're hooked for life.
2. Be smart. Thrift stores make it so easy to spend money for TONS of great items with their cheap prices, but you want to be smart with your money. Buy things that excite you, that if you left it there, you would lose sleep over it. If you see something that you feel you will probably see again, or similar to, leave it. Because usually, you find something even better more worth your money.
3. Try something different. See something you like but out of your comfort zone? Try it, what do you have to lose? It's not that money lost if you don't end up liking it, but think of the gain if you did try it and liked it? Challenge your style and see where it takes you.
What's your favorite thrifted piece in your closet?
\My favorite thrifted piece in my closet? Hmm.. that's so hard to choose. I would say it's a toss up between my acid wash jeans and my polka dot shorts.. at the moment!
How do you deal with negativity that's thrown your way? (Can be about business or a personal experience)
I take it, and turn it into a positive. I've always been an optimistic person. I take criticism and negativity as my fuel to do better.
Being an entrepreneur, you experience a lot of trial and error. What's the biggest lesson you've learned since becoming a business owner?
I've learned how to be smarter with my money and spending it. I use to buy everything I seen that I liked. I stopped doing that though, and focus more on one of a kind vintage pieces that would challenge my imagination and style and/or be more appealing to my customer base.
Where do you see your business in the next 5 years?
I hope my business expands, more so in different countries. I want VintyFreshClothing to do well everywhere, and I want everyone to know about VintyfreshClothing and the purpose behind it.
You wake up late. Your hair is a mess and you can't find anything to wear. What would be your go-to outfit and why?
It depends on what I have to do that day. If it's work, definitely a pair of color bottoms and a top to compliment. I have plenty of those to not worry about what I have to wear thankfully. If it's anything else, my acid wash jeans and a casual, but print, top. I don't really that many days where I am stressing about what to wear because I can usually look in my closet, maybe think about my options for 5 min, and come up with something and even if it isn't the best, my confidence in it will make it seem as though it is.

Meet Elrean Oohlala Pick Of The Day |
Tell me more about yourself.
A young African American woman that haves morals and long term goals. The three things that keeps me self driven are Ambition, Dedication and Motivation. I am 19 years old and I plan to have a long road ahead of me. I am currently the assistant manager at Aldo. This keeps me busy and will show my dedication towards my degree with going to school full time. I plan to transfer to Chicago University and take up Marketing. With Chicago being a big city, this will be the best location for me to network as well to get into the best internships for future jobs.
You have a very chic style. How would you define your style?
As far as my fashion, I'm a girl that is very simple but loves to look nice. This year I've been very about the blazer looks and now loving the high wasted flair pants look!! I love to look sexy of course but I'm more into a conservative look, you don't have to show everything off to get attention as a woman.
Many women look through fashion magazines for inspiration. What do you use as a style guide?
When looking for a style guide I honestly look at what makes me comfortable in my skin. I love all the trendy styles as far as color blocking and pointy toe heels.
Who is your style icon?
As far as people in the industry I love Ciara's style and of course the lovely Beyoncé.
What are some fashion risks you've taken? Were they good or bad results?
Some fashion risk's I can say I've taken are .... switching my hair color up, & some were nice and some were failure. Black is definitely my favorite. The hair was always styled properly but color doesn't always fit everyone!!!
What separates your style from other women?
What separate's my fashion from other woman would have to be I pick out clothing I like not to impress any one. Don't get me wrong yes I want to look nice to others. Your dress appeal is what people get a first impression of, yet I choose what makes me happy.
Where are your favorite stores to shop?
My favorite stores right now would defiantly have to be BCBG and Aldo of course. They both have very diverse style's and I feel in love with there spring collection.
|
Blazer is from BCBG |
What are your favorite summer colors?
My favorite colors this year towards fashion are coral and mint green. Ladies I'm sure you have seen them everywhere.
Can you see yourself with a career in fashion? Why or why not?
Could I see myself with a career towards fashion? Not necessary, unless I network in the right direction and have a focus towards that industry with marketing but as of now my focus is towards pharmaceutical with marketing there sales.

What are you majoring in at Kansas State University?
I'm majoring in Social Work.
What do you love most about college so far?
My favorite thing about college so far is being in a new town and meeting new people.
What are you most passionate about? And why?
I love working with kids, especially those who are in need. Majoring in Social Work has really taught me the importance of people no matter their race, position, or class. Everyone deserves equal opportunity and I want to be able to make differences (big or small) in someone’s life. After graduating I hope to earn my masters then find work with some sort of non-profit organization.
What's your favorite memory from your mission trip to Jamaica?
I loved meeting all the children in Jamaica and being able to play and teach them a little about The Lord. My favorite thing was being able to laugh with and love on the kids.
I love your style! What's your thought process when planning an outfit?
When planning an outfit I first think about what will look most flattering on my body type. I’m tall (5’10) so I have to search long and hard for jeans that are long enough, and for shorts that don’t show too much skin. Second, I choose colors that will look best on my skin tone. My clothing choices are definitely influenced by some of the latest trends, but I try to add a little of my own style into each outfit ;)
|
I like to keep it relatively simple when I go out. This skirt is just a normal cotton skirt from Forever 21, and the shirt and jewelry are from H&M. Not only do I like to keep it simple, I like to spend only a reasonable amount on clothes. Both of those stores are very affordable |

Meet Sheila Ellis-Glasper
I've known Sheila for a very long time. She has always been a positive, vibrant and kind-hearted person. When I learned of her jewelry line I was elated! Sheila has always been very fashion forward so I knew this jewelry line was going to be the bomb.com. Not only is she beautiful, she's intelligent. Former journalist, now entrepreneur, she exceeds every limitation anyone has ever put on her. The scripture Philippians 4:13 reminds me of Sheila. "I can do all things through Christ who strenghtens me".
Being best-dressed in high school, it's no secret that you are still in the fashion field. What inspired your taste in fashion?
My style has been inspired by everything around me! From my grandmother who always made sure her jewelry/purse/shoes matched with each outfit to reading luxury fashion magazines like Vogue and Bazaar.
How old were you when you knew you were creative?
When I was a young girl, about 4 or 5, I always wanted paper and crayons/pens to draw instead of playing with barbies. I wanted to create my own masterpieces.
Your jewelry line is very fashion forward and unique. How did you get started?
My husband actually wanted a bracelet that was very expensive for us at the time. I was determined to find a similar $250 bracelet for less online. I ended up taking a photo of it to a local beading store where the staff helped me recreate the same piece for a a quarter of the price. I gave the present to my husband for Christmas and he could hardly believe I made it. It was then I realized I had an untapped gift from God. I also saw a need for creating custom and quality jewelry at affordable prices
How did you come up with the name Precious Heart Designs?
The name of my business is totally inspired by my son. My younger sister, Vanessa, helped me come up with it; Precious Heart Shop. Since I had my son he's helped me to realize how precious life is and every single day is a blessing. Each piece is designed from the heart and made with love.
How has your business grown since you've first started? How did you deal with road blocks?
Business has grown tremendously since our start in January 2012. It was just an idea. I began making jewelry during my maternity leave & found a new passion. I started a website and began taking pictures of each creation. Soon sales started coming in.
My husband encouraged me to get a business license and see where God takes it. We are in May and we have already doubled our sales from last year. God is good! And I'm thankful for the opportunity to be a blessing to others through spreading God's word with jewelry.
Ms. Paigion, host from the popular BET video-countdown, 106 & Park, in her Precious Heart arm candy!
How do you balance being a wife, mother & entrepreneur? Can you give any tips to the working mother?
I'm still learning this. It can get overwhelming trying to balance each role. First and foremost, God gave me the vision for this business which has become a ministry for me. Which I never imagined that God would call me and use me in this capacity. I am encouraging others through God's word as well as myself! The pieces are all inspired by scripture and are shipped all over the the U.S. and in Europe, Africa, Australia, the Middle East & Canada. I've had customers hang their scripture card (that comes with each piece) on their bathroom mirror, car visor, desk at work etc. That let's me know my work is not in vain. If I can be an inspiration to one person each day, I've done my job. So this encourages me!
But it helps to have a supportive husband who understands me and my goals as a business woman. He has supported me from day one. I went from making jewelry and filling orders during my son's nap time and when he went to sleep at night to having him in a preschool three days a week. It was hard at first but as the business grew it was difficult to balance working from home and keeping up with a toddler! The older he gets the more active he is and needed to be around other children too.
A tip: It's OK to get help. I had to learn this. Sometimes you can't get everything done, but just prioritize and get the most important things done. Take help when it's given and don't feel guilty about it. Also set boundaries. I am learning this too still. Learning a time to cut business off and focus on family time.
What's your favorite jewelry piece you've made?
I would have to say the "Taken" set. Inspired by Maya Angelou's quote: "A woman's heart should be so hidden in Christ that a man has to seek Him just to find her."
What was your reaction when you received your first negative comment and how did you deal with it?
Anyone pursuing their passion and going off the beaten path into an entrepreneur lifestyle is going to have opposition from friends and family who are not of the same mindset.
I had to stay encouraged that I was and am following God's plan for my life and this is necessary.
My best experience is hearing positive feedback from clients who love their jewelry and are inspired by it. I have made pieces for people who were battling cancer and a friend custom ordered a piece to encourage them. I love seeing the impact I am able to make through spreading God's word through wearable art. My business is much more than just jewelry. Our motto is " Make a FAITH Statement." The pieces serve as a constant reminder of our faith, that God is always with us through each step of life.
I absolutely adore Precious Heart Shop designs. I had to get a piece for my mother who is a Minister and loves fun inspirational pieces.
You can also purchase jewelry from Precious Heart Shop and Make a FAITH statement of your own.
