Hair Obsession
I am totally obsessed with Alexandria Walker's hair. Alexandria is no stranger to my blog. She's a good friend of mine and has been featured on my blog before. Alexandria always has a funky trendy hair color or style. This style pretty much took my breath away. In a way, I'm having hair envy. I vowed to never ever cut or color my hair again. We ALL do this huh? Make such a crazy promise on a temporary feeling. Who am I kidding.. I'm totally coloring or highlighting my hair. I may not cut it but I'm definitely doing something to take the edge off. Enough of me, on to Alexandria's new 'do. Don't you absolutely love it???

Hair Spa Day

Hey loves,

So I have a hair testimony! Yesssssssss. I woke up today wanting to try new products for my hair. I have lots of growth from keeping it straight with a low maintenance wrap & go. So I was anxious to see what my hair would look like curly again since it had been sooooo long.

I ran to Walgreens and found some great jewels. Shea Moisture had a BOGO sale going on so I kind of went crazy!

I got home and shampooed with Aussie Moist. (NO picture of that since it was in my shower already)

I picked up Shea Moisture's Purification Masque

This right here works wonder. When I think of masque I think of bulky chunky clay like consistency but no it was very light weight with a smooth consistency and smelled like bananas with a hint of clay. I smoothed the product on my hair and continued with my shower for the next 15 mins. Rinsed it out and my scalp felt tingly and clean. I do suffer from dandruff and this winter it was horrid. Great product to use. It was lovely.

Next,

My best friend Allie has been telling me for MONTHS to go and get this product. I don't know what I was waiting for. It worked fantastic. The hair gods are pleased with my decisions today. This product has great slip and was very cleansing. I then detangled my hair with the Denman brush. It overall made my hair feel very bouncing.

I dried my hair with an old t-shirt and parted my hair into four sections and rubbed Shea Moisture's Curl and Style Milk. I added Shea Moisture's Curl Enhancing Smoothie which is a staple in my hair regimen.

I feel like when you use a lot of the same product with one style it works best and these products don't contain sulfate. That has been a major problem for me. Alot of the popular products have sulfate in them which makes my hair frizzy and dry.

I was hesitant about using this product but to my surprise it was light weight and defined my curls pretty well. This consistency was nothing like Eco Styling Gel. It was loose and silky. I love it. I am so skeptical when it comes to trying new things. Summer is vastly approaching so its time to figure out the kinks in my hair regimen.

Sorry for the look. I was trying to look sexy FAIL haha just kidding. These are my results. I definitely can see myself rocking a wash n go in the summer. All it takes is the right products and TONS of conditioner.

I am loving flat twists per usual so I flat twisted about 7 sections in my head and stretched them using my Goody hair ties.

I misted them with this Organix Coconut Oil and VOILA perfection.

Do you have any of these products? Whats your regimen? Let me know and follow my instagram page!

Hey everyone,

I know I have been gone for such a long time. Don't kill me! During my hiatus, I went to my home town Topeka, KS to visit friends and family.

While I was there I got SMASH GLAMMED!

I was so excited for this shoot. I basically packed my whole life for this shoot.

These are just pictures of the make up. Official pictures coming soon.

Make up by Aisha Simon

I loved this look. It went perfectly with my NYE outfit.

I spent my New Year's Eve in downtown Kansas City with friends.

Definitely one of my favorite memories. Started my 2014 with a bang!

BANTU KNOT

Believe it or not but this was actually a really pretty twist out when I went to work. I stepped outside to walk to my car and BOOM POW BAM this happened. So when you have places to go and people to see, you have to just go with it. I winged it. I changed my shirt, threw on some lipstick and there you go. I pulled it together and make it look like this was on purpose. Natural Hair always has a mind of its own.

I attempted to do Bantu Knots and I succeeded. The very first time I tried bantu knots I didn't let my hair air dry for a while. I washed then bantu knotted my hair. That was a HUGE mistake. With bantu knots, your hair has to be completely dry in order for them to come out neat and pretty. So when you air dry for a little bit you have a better chance at having 100% dry hair when you take them down.

Products I used:

Co washed with V05

I left a little bit of conditioner in my hair as always

Shea Moisture's Curl Enhancing Smoothie just for added moisture to pair with my coconut oil.

I usually don't mix Eco Styling Gel with my hair styles but I decided I wanted extra hold.

1. Separate your hair into 4 sections.

2. Do 4 twists in each section

3. Start wrapping your hair around itself until it coils.

4. Tuck the ends of your hair under the knot.

VOILA!

The key to fullness is just to separate the curls until it's perfect for you. I recommend you not use a comb. Use your fingers to pull them apart.

How to preserve your hair without re doing your style

PINEAPPLE.

Time for Facials!

You want to talk about a deal? Lets talk about Studio Beauty's cleansing masks for $1.00 each at Walgreens! I got a variety of masks but I decided to try this one since my skin had been breaking out from me running outside. Weird right? Oh well. I left it on for 15 mins as instructed and peeled it off. I would definitely use this again. Cheap and cleansing. You can't beat that!

Wet Bunning Challenge is OVER

Shoulder length hair

The whole month of June I had my hair in a bun for the most part. I can tell my hair LOVED the low manipulation style. In the midst of my bun challenge, my 2 month HEAT FREE hair challenge came. Overall, My hair grew about 2 inches. It's all about retaining length ladies. OKAY, secret time....

In my spray bottle there is Olive Oil, water, conditioner, tea tree oil, coconut oil and BIOTIN..

WHAT? Biotin???

Yes Dolls!

I got the tip from my BFFL who got it from Naptural85 (hey Whitney *waves*)

My experience with ingesting biotin was bad. My skin broke out and it was super oily. I don't need any help with oily skin because my skin is already oily so Biotin was a NO GO!

Fed up with Biotin, my BFFL suggested that I put it into my spray bottle. It will eventually dissolve. Hmmm, DIRECT CONTACT WITH MY HAIR!? Yup, so that's what I did. My nails still grew fast because I am always touching my hair and my hair is still growing fast. This is the best kept secret that I'm letting LOOSE. Why hold it in? No!

Previously, I said I wanted to start wearing more twist outs. I really liked the freedom I had with my hair. I hate re-twisting my hair (unless I have something important to do). So, I began to pineapple. Pineappling is an easy method to do at night so you can maintain your style. I lightly mist my hair, get a loose head band, pull my hair to the front and tie my scarf around my head and go to bed.

In the morning I shake my hair, rub Olive oil throughout my hair and go. Last week was a breeze with my hair!

I love how my hair is touching my lower neck with these twists!

GROWTH

Hair Update

Back in April, I started a Heat-Free Hair Challenge that I am doing for 6 months. I measured my hair using measuring tape. I decided to track my growth every two months like Taren Guy did when she cut her hair. I didn't cut my hair but I did dye it back black. Thank God! I'm still growing out my bangs. I doubt I will ever cut my hair short again. My last trim was mid March. I don't plan on getting another trim until October unless something drastically changes.

Hair Measurements:

April

Side Front - 7 3/4 in

Back - 6 in

Bangs - 5 1/4 in

June

Side Front - 9 in

Back - 7.5 in

Bangs - 7 1/4

In two months my hair grew about 2 inches over all give or take. I'm very happy with my results. I'm still heat free. My next update will be August 18th.

Stay tuned!

xoxo,

Mandy

Flat Twist Out

Flat Twist Out

Flat Twist Outs are my friend. It's my go to style. I braid down the twists to stretch them while they're damp for a crimp curl look. You can't see the back but my hair is getting alot of length. I'm so happy my hair is recovering from the bleaching, stress from weaves & etc. Black is better for me. My 2 month length check is tomorrow. I will post pictures.

See this post also on my instagram page.

xoxo,

Mandy

Until Thursday night, I could not figure out how to put my hair in a bun that didn't look ridiculous. My hair is at that awkward stage where its too long to be a TWA but too short to really be considered shoulder length. I could not figure out how to rock a cute bun. One of my best friends told me about a video she watched on YouTube. This less than 2 minute video changed and saved my life. I was in awe and mad at myself for not thinking of this. I immediately ran to my hair accessory drawer to find a stretchy head band to achieve this style. VOILA. There it was. My life has been changed forever.

Now that I am obsessed with buns, I've been on YouTube all day and hair care forums to see the benefits of wearing buns. I remember a friend of mine used to 'wet bun' all the time. Needless to say her hair is APL (arm pit length). So my obsession now has benefits? This could get crazy!

I took it upon myself to do a Wet Bun protective style challenge. For the entire month of June I will rock a bun. Low bun, high bun, middle bun, side bun, bun with a part.. You name it, I'm rocking it. I have been so ready to give my hair a break. While searching the web and forums I came across FromShortToLong.com and she had some great tips for wet bunning and how to avoid damage and breakage.

http://www.fromshorttolong.com/2010/04/wet-bunning-tips.html?m=1

Wet Bunning Tips

Wet bunning is great for protecting the length of your hair and for obtaining your dream ends. However, if done incorrectly it can damage your hair.

The most important thing to remember when wet bunning is to listen to your hair! If your hair hates wet bunning, then do not do it! If your hair is breaking, try a protein treatment and if it persits, stop wet bunning, etc. Again, Just listen to your hair.

When wet bunning, I:
Soak my hair bands in oil once a week: This prevents hair from coming out where the band holds your hair every day. I use whatever oil I feel like at the moment, I put a good amount in the bottom of a cup and put all of my hair bands all of the way in the oil. I leave them in for at least 2 hours and then I lay them on my counter to dry, turning them once or twice while they dry.
Reposition the bun frequently: This prevents thinning in the area where the bun is formed. If you frequently switch it up between high, medium, and low buns, then this should not be a problem.
Give your hair line a break: Every night I take my bun down, put my hair in a very loose braid and let my hair dry. Then at night I just throw on my bonnet and the next morning I wet bun again.

Keep your hair detangled: I comb my hair daily while wet to smooth before bunning. This also keeps it from getting ratty, matted and drawn up. You can use your fingers to do this as well. DO NOT USE a shower detangling comb unless your hair is wet because they will more than likely rip your hair out when dry. If you are co-washing then finger detangle in the shower.

Keep your hair clean!: You are wetting and putting product on your hair and inevitably your scalp every day. Only an unclogged scalp can get maximum growth, so be sure to shampoo once a week to prevent build up.

I will be taking pics of my hair weekly then show the results at the end of June. You should join my protective styling challenge too!

Please introduce yourself.

I am 32. I have been in the military since I was 20. I am in the army reserves now (Active for 8 years), Thank God. I am currently in Law school and I'm almost finished. I hate it. I work part-time for a family law office. I have two sons, 8 and 8 months. They are the reason I keep going.

How long have you been natural?

I have been natural for a little over 2 years. I BC'd (big chopped) in February 2011.

What has been the most rewarding part about your journey so far?

I use to love the movie "The Craft" because of the black girl with curly hair. I was so jealous of her!! But after going natural I realized my hair was curly too. I was hype lol. Being natural is a movement. We have finally freed ourselves of what society told us what was beautiful... straight hair.

What is your opinion on hair types?

Hair types... I feel all hair types are pretty. No one is better than the other due to if you have kinky, curly, or fuzzy hair. I feel just being a black woman with natural hair is gorgeous.

What have you learned to embrace about your hair?

My hair is so much funner to do rather then when I had a perm. Also I can throw it in a high bun and it can still be poppin'. It seems the less I do my hair the more compliments I get when I go out. It's crazy.

What are your go-to hair styles?

I like it big and crazy. I like to throw it up into my quick puff.

What are your must-have products?

I love my "it's a ten" leave in conditioner and my Paul Mitchell curls. Oh, and my coconut oil.

Some women find it hard to successfully take care of their natural hair and have small children. How do you find the balance?

I don't believe it's hard to take care of at all you just have to walk around with confidence. You don't always have to do braid outs or twists. Wash that stuff and go and throw on some mascara and lipsticks lol!

Who is your favorite naturalista?

I love frenchyfatim! Her and her hair and length is beautiful and she's a vlogger. Her videos are awesome.

I co-washed my hair with my VO5 conditioner. I used my go-to moisturizer Shea Moisture's curl enhancing smoothie for extra moisture and smoothness. Currently in my spray bottle I have olive oil, tea tree oil, conditioner, biotin, and water. It works wonders on my hair.

Erin M.
Twist n' Curl twist out

Erin shows us how to achieve bouncy curls that will last.

She started out with freshly washed hair using her Creme of Nature Argan Oil conditioner.

She used Olive Oil miracle lotion and Motions moisturizer before she started her twists.

While twisting her hair, Erin sprayed the Care Free Curl activator on her hair before twisting. She used Jam at the ends of her hair for extra hold. After Erin made her individual twists, she set the perm rods at the ends for an extra curl.

I love this look. Perfect curly style for summer

Meet Whitley

Whitley is a funny, educated and spunky woman who explores with natural hair styles and techniques in her free time. Whitley gives great tips on her Instagram page (@prettyWhitit) about natural hair and hair care. She has been featured on many natural hair pages showing off her curls.

Please introduce yourself

My name is Whitley. I guess you would know me from Instagram. I'm originally from Dallas, Texas but I went to school in Kansas. I have my Masters in Architecture from K-State. I'm more of a creative person so that's why I got into doing my natural hair and trying different hair styles.

Tell us your hair story?

If you watch the video that pretty much explains it all. I started my hair journey in 2010. I thought about going natural beforehand but it really didn't happen until I studied abroad. I was in Italy and couldn't get a perm so that's what jump started me to go natural. While I was transitioning it wasn't too bad. I did mostly perm rods sets, roller sets and flexi rod sets. When it got longer it got harder because I wasn't ready for the big chop. I transitioned for 2 years. When I got ready to do the big chop, I cut it into a bob. I still wore it straight. That little bob lasted about two days. So I wore bantu knots for a while. I began to travel with my job so I got box braids and washed them weekly. I had those braids in all summer and for a little bit of the fall. I had a ton of new growth when I took my braids down in October of that year. Sometime in December, I started experimenting with my own hair and that's when my true journey began.

Whats a natural hair mistake that you've made?

I regret not getting more of a full sew in because my hair would break off around the perimeter. I had a little heat damage and it was very inconvenient when I did my wash'n'gos.

(Pictured with boyfriend DeMarkus Coleman who was also featured for Man Crush Monday. Founder of KC Sneak Fest)

Have you always liked your curls? If not, how did learn to embrace them?

I have not always liked my curls. At the time when I didn't like my natural curl pattern, my curls hadn't formed yet. It wasn't at its complete natural state, yet. I didn't like my curl pattern until I found my own leave in conditioner. It took me a few months to adjust to it.

What kind of reactions did you get when you first started to wear your natural hair out?

From people of ethnicity, they loved it immediately. My boyfriend was doubtful. When we started talking I was transitioning. I kept telling him “My hair is curly. I'm going to have curls.”, but he thought I was crazy. He thought I was going to do the big chop and be bald-headed. When he saw it, he liked it. I already had friends who had curly hair so I received a lot of love from them as well.

The reaction I got from my coworkers however was a different story. They didn't understand the concept of going from having 20 inch weave to short curly hair. In the work place I prefer something a little more tamed and professional.

I had a positive experience transitioning. I felt free. Then I was like “Oh shoot what am I going to do?” I never really had a negative experience.

The time I most felt unsure or insecure about how my hair looked is when I colored it. It took me a long time to even cut my bangs. I'm the type of person that has to process things for a while and make sure it's a good idea. When I first colored my hair I hated it. I wanted to track my hair growth and the quickest and easiest way to do that is seeing your new growth come in. The hair color was lighter at top and my eyebrows were black. It just didn't look right to me. No matter how many told me it did but eventually it grew on me.

What are your staple hair styles?

As a natural my wash'n'go. That's what I wanted to achieve when I transitioned. And since there are so many definitions of a wash n' go my definition would be my natural curl pattern without any manipulation. Now-a-days, a wash'n'go is whats easiest for you to do whether that be a twist out for the week or what have you. It's just something that's simple for you.

How do you accomplish your wash'n'go?

I think the best way is to show you. I might do a tutorial on it. I use Shea Moisture Curl smoothie, water and Eco Styling Gel and make sure you work it in all over. I use a Denman brush too. Its amazing. It definitely defines my curls.

What are your 3 must-have products?

Shea moisture (the product line), Eco Styling Gel, Denman, and oh wait bobby pins..

What does your hair regimen consist of?

During the week I'm really low maintenance so I do wash'n'gos. On Sunday night, I wash my hair and do my wash'n'go and that's how I wear my hair all week. I need to do a tutorial for the morning routine on it. Because I find it that a lot of people are washing their hair everyday. And usually when it gets closer to the weekend I'll do a wash'n'go again or something new just to be cute for the weekend.

Any hair advice to new naturalistas?

Find someone with a more similar curl pattern to yours so you're not distraught when you cut your hair and your hair doesn't look like theirs. Take a lot pictures to compare your hair from week to week or month to month. It's really what I use Instagram for.

What would you say is your hair goal?

My hair goal would be to get all my hair at one length.

I'm not too focused on hair goals because I know itll take awhile. I wanna grow out my bangs and I want have versatile hair. Meaning, I want to wear a straight style and not get heat damage.

Have you noticed any changes in your hair?

I think from using Shea Moisture's product line or a consistent product has made my hair softer and I don't have a lot of tangling. I notice alot people say they get fairy knots but I haven't had any issues with that. It's way softer and more manageable now.

Meet Shalis

An ambitious working woman who balances life in an admiring way. She's a christian woman, educated, gifted and not to mention beautiful. Shalis is a personal role model of mine and has been for many years. She is a supportive wife, mother, sister, and friend. Her vibrant personality and infectious smile can brighten up anyone's day. She is a true definition of Black Girls who Rock.

I've known you for quite sometime now. It's a real blessing to know you but for those who don't know you introduce yourself please.

Hello I am Shalis Brooks. I am a 34 year old woman who loves God first, my family, and my career!

What are your degree(s) in and why did you choose this field?

I have a Masters Degree in Social Work. I chose this field because I love helping others. I have always been an encourager and to me being able to help others in need is a blessing in itself.

How do you balance a career, being a wife and mother?

Prayer!! LOL I love that I have a great support system from my wonderful husband and my three children. They keep me grounded as well a busy but it’s so worth it.

You are a role model and inspiration to young women everywhere. What drives you to be so successful?

My upbringing. I look at my role models which are my grandparents and my parents and they always inspired me to do my best and be the best I can be and it has helped me to become a better career woman as well as a better wife and mother. There is a quote I have in my office that I read every morning that states : In order to succeed, your desire for success should be greater than your fear of failure. And that is why everyday through faith I know I will succeed!

What advice would you give the younger generation that's looking up to you?

Be yourself! I see to many young people following after their peers and not having a mind of their own. That scares me because they have so much potential but they aren’t using it because they are worried about what others will say. Who cares!

Isn't being natural so much fun? When did you decide to go natural? And why?

I LOVE being natural. I decided to go natural two years ago thanks to the help of Christina Phillips and I am so glad I did. I decided to go natural because I was tired of getting relaxers and the grade of hair I have and my curl pattern there was so much I could do going natural and have not regretted it.

What is the most rewarding part about being natural?

I can wear a different style at any time. The Versatility.

What does your regimen consist of?

My daily regimen is shea butter, coconut oil, and Shea Moisture Organic Hold and Shine Mist. But I use lots of other products depending on what style I am doing.

Any hair tips?

Keep your hair moisturized! Also cowash once a week and do a deep conditioning treatment once a week!

After talking to one of my curl friends, I decided to give this wash'n'go thing another try. In the past, I have tried to do them and my hair hated it. It got really frizzy and tangled. So since then I have just done my staple flat twists. There's nothing wrong with them but there really are those moment where you want to wash'n'go. I followed to How To video that MsVCharles has about her coils. I used her method to achieve my wash'n'go.

My hair is freshly co-washed and I finger detangled my hair in the shower. I left all the conditioner in. I started in sections by oiling my scalp with olive oil and following the wash'n'go method.

Products

I use avery cheap conditioner because I use alot. VO5 works great on my hair and provides just enough slip. I decided to try a new gel until I find a beauty supply store that carries Eco Styling Gel here in Pittsburgh. La Bella works pretty good. It was very cheap like $1.80 i think. I don't prefer it over Eco Styling Gel but it works well.

One thing I don't have that I wish I did have is a Denman Brush. I used a regular bristle brush and it worked well but I still will try my wash'n'go when I get my Denman brush.

Finished

xoxo,

Mandy

I'm still loving my black hair opposed to the blonde. It looks healthier in each and every way. My nails look dirty because of the hair dye. HA!

Dying my hair back to health. I enjoyed my blonde hair. It took me a while to make that decision to bleach my hair. I knew I had to be careful when it came to taking care of it. The blonde hair rumor is true. After a while my hair felt dry and brittle. I had way too much new growth and I'm not into the ombre look. I love my black hair. My natural hair color is a sandy brown with red streaks. With that being said, alot of my hair didn't dye because my natural red is stubborn. (Lebanese genes). My curls are more curly and springy and my hair looks alot healthier. I think ill stay away from dyes for a while.

Mandy

Saturday I was sitting in the living room just twirling my hair . I was watching Remember The Titans and I looked in the mirror and say "Hey this could be a style." So I of course YouTubed it and what do ya know... tutorials on coils came up. Duh. I watched AfrikanHairGod's video of it and fell in love. Well, I finished my coils and loved them. Then I got curious to see how they would look uncoiled after they dried. To my surprise (well this wasn't a surprise) I liked the look. It reminded me of Shirley Temple. I didn't feel like dealing with my hair today so I threw it up into a puff and VIOLA magic. Probably the easiest low maintenance style. COILS

Just when it couldn't get any better, we both share the love of the color yellow.

How long have you been natural or transitioning?
My first naturalversary will be in August.
How long was your transition?
Almost a year, I think.
What made you return back to your natural state of hair?
My hair stopped growing and was super damaged because of relaxers so I didn't have a choice. It was either have thinning straight hair or thick nappy hair.

Meet Ashley F.

Natural Hair Vlogger - Naturallox

How old are you?

I'm 24.

Future goals and aspirations?

I always wanted to be a famous singer but since that didn't pan out, I want to be involved with hair in some way. I really haven't figured out exactly what but I love all types of hair. I love the actual follicle and how to keep it healthy and grow long.

What made you start a natural hair vlog?

I started this channel because I saw all these ladies be so brave and put their self out there for the world to see and that just motivated me to document my hair growth process on camera!

What is your goal for your YouTube channel?

I don't really have a set goal for my YouTube channel. I just want to help anyone who does not know what to do with their curly locks. I didn't really have anyone to help me maintain the health of my hair while growing up so I want to at least help one girl keep up the health of her hair.

How long have you been natural?

I have been natural for about 7 years.

Did you transition or big chop?

I transitioned. I didn't really know about the B.C. when I transitioned, I just knew that I could rock my natural hair and didn't need to put that chemical on it any longer!

What is your advice for those who are thinking about returning to their natural state?

I say for anyone who would like to transition over to be natural, Go for it! Its beautiful! I think once you embrace it you will love it and wonder why you didn't do it sooner!

Any upcoming events?

Right now, I don't really have anything coming up. I just finished being a hair model in a hair show with Celebrity hairstylist, Tippi Shorter! I am actually in the process of editing the video I taped so I can put that on my channel. So watch out for that video it will be coming soon.

Meet Taylor Wilson

Make Up Artist extraordinaire

What inspired you to become a cosmetologist/make up artist?

"I've always been really interested in the beauty industry since I was real young. No matter what I did or thought I wanted to do it as a career. I always found myself going back towards the beauty industry. I am so passionate about make up and hair and I couldn't imagine myself doing anything different. My life would be miserable if I would have chosen a different career path."

What do you most enjoy about doing make up?

"What I love about my career is that I can make people feel good about themselves. Just a simple makeover could change how a person looks at themselves and make them feel beautiful. I absolutely love making people feel amazing. I've even had people cry because they never thought they could be so pretty."

Where do you see your business in the next 5 years?

"In 5 years I see myself being a successful makeup artist/hair stylist. Hopefully working in a nice city and having a loyal clientele."

New Hair Style
I'm growing my bangs out along with doing a Heat Free Hair Challenge for 6 months. I have blonde coloring in my hair and I really like it but I will let my color grow out too. I like this protective style. It's cute and its giving my hair a break. Thanks mom for the up-do. Easy maintenance.
